United States national team icon Landon Donovan says it’s not the time to hit the panic button after the disappointing start to the World Cup qualifying campaign ahead of next year’s edition in Qatar. Landon Donovan spoke to SiriusXM FC shortly after the United States played out a goalless draw with hosts El Salvador. According to him, it is too early to start criticisingthe team and that it’s crazy for some fans to think that the draw is a bad result.
Landon Donovan is the United States player with the most caps apart from Cobi Jones. The former Everton and Los Angeles Galaxy (LA Galaxy) attacker made 157 appearances for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) during his playing career. The aforementioned Jones is the record holder with 164 caps.
Donovan believes that a draw on the road is not a bad result for the United States and that a draw in away games plus a win in home games would be enough to get the team into Qatar 2022.
A lot of the players in the latest 25-man squad had not featured in a World Cup qualifier until the El Savador game. Only six players were previously involved in at least a World Cup qualifier.
Since the draw in El Salvador, the United States have won one and drawn one of their two qualifying games thus making it five points from three games. The United States are third on the CONCACAF standings behind Canada and leaders Mexico. The United States have the same number of points with Canada but with an inferior goal difference, while top spot recipient Mexico have two more points than the team. The United States also have the same number of points as Panama in fourth place.
The CONCACAF region is in the third round as far as qualification for Qatar 2022 is concerned.
